St Clement Danes Church, the Strand

A place not only of bankers and lawyers. For the people of London, postal districts of their city don't have just a geographical meaning but also a social and economic significance: they tell you if a district is rich or poor, inhabited by business managers or working class residents.

The EC (Eastern Central) postcode area, bordered by the river Thames, includes almost all of the City of London, which is in the EC1, EC2, EC3 and EC4 postal districts.

In EC2 are important buildings, like the Guildhall and the Barbican, and one of London's main stations, Liverpool Street, linking the capital to the East and Stansted Airport.

The EC4 means Fleet Street, a synonym for "the press" as the historic home of British newspapers until the 1980s, when they started moving east, to Wapping and Canary Wharf.

EC4 includes the splendid St Paul's Cathedral, one of London' major landmarks, the masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren, Britain's greatest architect.

Wren also built another church in the area, St Clement Danes (pictured), standing on a traffic island on the Strand, the celebrated theatre and hotel thoroughfare which ends where Fleet Street begins.

But what EC4 is most famous for is the City of London, also known as the "Square Mile", one of the world's leading financial centres. The Bank of England is here, in Threadneedle Street, as well as the London Stock Exchange, while the historic Moorgate, originally an ancient Roman postern and now a street of banks and investment banks, is in EC2.

The Temple is also in EC4, near Temple Church. It is a major legal district of London, important both historically and currently for law. The Temple comprises the Inner Temple and the Middle Temple, two of the four Inns of Court.
