London Tower Bridge at dusk

London was once a thriving river port, indeed the world's largest port, and the signs are still there, in that area of East London, mostly north of the river Thames, called the Docklands. In Dickens' novels, in particular Great Expectations, you have a glimpse of what this great city port used to be in Victorian times.

Although now the district has been redeveloped mainly for commercial and residential use, the river here still makes its powerful presence felt. Wharfs, warehouses and docks dot the place, in original form or more frequently converted into modern and often luxury apartments, marinas and watersports centres. Even large ships sometimes visit the old docks.

The Docklands' vicinity to that incredible, global financial centre that is the City of London has probably contributed to the astonishing revival and development of the Docklands in recent times, as a phoenix reborn from its own ashes.

An area in particular, Canary Wharf, has attracted major banks, financial institutions, services firms and media companies of international importance, so much so that it is now one of the UK's main business and financial centres, second only to the City of London itself. Many of the tallest buildings in Europe are located there, towering over the waters.

Areas of the Docklands are Canada Water, Surrey Quays, the Royal Docks, and the Isle of Dogs with Canary Wharf. Greenwich and the Isle of Dogs can look at each other from across the Thames.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) easily connects the Docklands with the City and the rest of London, and so does the Underground's Jubilee Line. The ExCel Centre is an important international business venue overlooking the Royal Docks.
