Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College

Greenwich has naval, astronomic, historic and royal associations, in addition to lying beside the blue waters of the river Thames and having a splendid park, a fashionable neighbourhood and a lively market. In short, with so much in it, it's a little gem among the districts of London.

The naval and astronomic histories are linked, as astronomy helps safe navigation through the knowledge of your position at sea derived from studying the sun and stars. The reason why the Prime Meridian is named after Greenwich is related to the discovery of longitude as a further aid to navigation.

In Greenwich you'll find lots of signs of its long, interesting history, which includes having been an important home of royalty: the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the Old Royal Naval College (pictured), the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Palace, the Queen's House, the Cutty Sark ship that used to carry tea from China to Britain, and even the little-known Fan Museum.
