Camden Lock on the Regent's Canal in Camden Town, London

St Pancras International is one of London's most important rail stations, not least as it's the terminal for the Eurostar train connecting the sceptred isle of Great Britain to the European continent (Paris in France and Brussels in Belgium being the most direct destinations) without touching water, by the use of the tunnel under the English Channel, or Eurotunnel.

This makes Britain, strictly speaking, not literally an island any more, since it is now linked to other lands by land.

The Channel Tunnel trip is much faster than a ferry crossing. The most direct route between Britain and France, namely to Calais from Folkestone or Dover, takes about 35 minutes by train and 1 and a half hours to 2 and a half hours by ferry.

It's impossible to talk about St Pancras International Station without mentioning the other two great train stations very close to it: Kings Cross and Euston.

All the three stations were built in the 19th century, but only St Pancras has that characteristic Victorian Gothic architecture that gave it its Grade I listed building status, designed for Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Indeed St Pancras has been called the "cathedral of the railways", and includes two of Victorian times' most prestigious structures: its train shed and its facade.

This area is home to many of London landmarks and attractions. including the British Museum, British Library, Madame Tussauds, Regent's Park, and is minutes away from the heart of the West End on foot or by the wealth of public transport connections.

But one of its forgotten little gems is the Regent's Canal that runs through it just behind the train stations and then along the northern edge of Regent's Park, but not before bending at Camley Street Natural Park and going on to cross the vibrant district of Camden Town with its popular street market, where the Camden Lock (see photo) is manually operated on the canal and you can take a waterbus in the summer to the lovely Little Venice.
