The London Eye at night

Waterloo Station is not only one of London's main train stations, with a Tube (Underground) station for internal city transport as well.

It is also surrounded by many of the principal attractions and landmarks of the capital.

Waterloo Station is very close to the river Thames and the Southbank Centre, a major riverside complex of arts and entertainment venues that is Europe's largest centre for the arts. It includes, among other things, the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery, not to mention the street entertainment, festivals and markets along the embankment itself.

Further along the South Bank is the National Theatre, and then the Globe Theatre, brought back to life from the times of Shakespeare, whose plays were often first performed here, hence the name Shakespeare's Globe.

Waterloo Station is very near the London Eye (pictured), the giant Ferris Wheel on the Thames affording magnificent views over London. Iconic, observational and fun.

You may think it ends here, but it doesn't. From the embankment you'll see the tower of the Big Ben, the huge bell whose enormouss clock - the world's second largest - has been marking the time of the city since 1859.

Take the Westminster Bridge, cross the river and you'll be at the foot of the Big Ben tower, and see the Houses of Parliament, aka the Palace of Westminster, which you first saw across the Thames, next to it. And then you'll still have all the rest of London's city centre to explore.
