Oxford - Bridge of Sighs

Oxford is home to the most prestigious university in the United Kingdom, with Cambridge coming close second.

In England, Oxford is, along with Eton, synonymous with elite education in a social class sense.

Oxford is also one of the main tourist cities in England.

It is considered divided into "town", where ordinary people live, and "gown", the colleges and campuses, with a slight class connotation in this separation.

Oxford is a very charming town and great seat of learning. The historic colleges of the University of Oxford are beautiful and impressive, with their cloisters, quads (short for quadrangles, four-sided courtyards generally covered by a large lawn and surrounded by buildings) and gardens.

Other attractions are the Sheldonian Theatre with busts of philosophers outside it, designed by Christopher Wren and built in 1664-1668, the Bodleian Library and the Bridge of Sighs, so called for its vague resemblance to Venice's famous bridge by the same name (pictured).

The river Thames flows through the city, although in Oxford it is called Isis (now become an ominous acronym, but actually predating it as it stems from the Latin name for the Thames, Tamesis). The Isis is sailed by punts, long and narrow boats with a flat bottom, propelled with a long pole and used for relaxation and fun.

Oxford is the county town of Oxfordshire, in England's most prosperous region, the South East. Oxford is about 60 miles from London, around 1 hour and 20 minutes' drive via the M40 and A40.
