Harrogate Hotels from £40
Harrogate is a beautiful historic spa town in the West Riding, one of the traditional sub-divisions of Yorkshire.
Its mineral springs were discovered as long ago as 1571. In the 1700s it was a thermal resort of choice for the wealthy, and the elegance has remained, even though spa treatments are less fashionable and the style has been transferred to hotels and convention venues.
Not only the town itself is lovely, but the scenery of its surroundings is among the most gorgeous in Yorkshire and the North of England generally.
Harrogate is in a hilly, airy location, and is a place of rich gardens and abundat trees, spacious parks and stately architecture, design boutique shops and rich tea and cake cafes like the regionally-famous Bettys Tea Rooms, theatres and Victorian buildings, lush flower-beds and vegetation, arts and nightlife, and of course the Royal Pump Room, home to Europe's strongest sulphur well and now a museum of Harrogate's spa history.
The best view of the town of Harrogate is from the Observation Tower or Harlow Hill Tower, the town's highest building and view point at 700ft above sea level. The tower is in Otley Road and overlooks a large stretch of Yorkshire.
And, last but not least, Harrogate is on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park with its varied landscape of rivers, valleys, meadows, hills, hamlets and waterfalls, which is just a 20-mininute drive (12.7 miles) from Harrogate via the A59.
